Farmington Public Safety Email Alerts are about to get bigger and better with the help of Nixle.  The New Jersey based company specializes in assisting local police departments to directly communicate neighborhood safety alerts and other public safety information to residents by using their secure computer terminals to send out messages via email, text or to a user’s TWITTER account.  The system also allows police departments to attach photographs and area maps to the messages.

Farmington Police pioneered community public safety alerts by starting the email alert system in 2007.  Since then, hundreds or Farmington residents have registered to receive email alerts.  Commander Frank Demers said, “The email alert system has been a huge success for us.  I’m constantly hearing from residents about how thankful they are to receive the email alerts.  The NIXLE system will only serve to improve our ability to keep our residents informed.”

Farmington residents who register for the system will receive time-sensitive alert messages that will contain more detailed information.  Under the current system, residents can only receive messages to their email accounts.  With NIXLE, residents can choose to receive text messages to their cell phones or have messages sent to their TWITTER accounts.

Access to NIXLE is free of charge; however, standard text message fees do apply.  NIXLE maintains a secure database and will not sell or distribute email addresses of its users.  Residents who are currently registered to receive email alerts will be sent a link to the NIXLE website to register for the service.  Farmington Police would like to encourage those who do not currently receive email alerts to register for this service.  For more information about NIXLE, visit www.nixle.com or contact Commander Frank Demers at (248)474-4700 or email fdemers@ci.farmington.mi.us.
