MONTHLY CRIME PREVENTION REMINDERS

A review of the criminal activity in July demonstrates the critical importance of citizens acting as our eyes and ears.  Burglary and theft arrests occurred as a direct result of witness information provided to the public safety department.  A review of July crime demonstrates how many crimes were committed in broad daylight that had to be witnessed, but the activity may not have appeared suspicious.  Please report any suspicious activity and anything that could be a crime in progress.

Please be on guard to report suspicious activity related to scrap metal thefts.  During July, scrap metal thieves were chased away from business dumpsters.  Car wash water grates were stolen, transmission housings were stolen, and a heating oil tank was stolen in broad daylight by a Caucasian male driving a blue pick-up truck at Nine Mile and Grand River.  The oil tank spilled oil on a sixty-five foot long by ten foot wide stretch of asphalt that created a hazardous materials situation and required clean up.

Congratulations Farmington for keeping your garage doors closed.  There has yet to be a theft of a mower, bicycle, golf clubs, tools, etc. from an open garage.  Last summer, Farmington public safety officers distributed hundreds of notices to residents who left their garage doors open in the raised position all night.  This summer, officers have rarely observed an open garage door.  Year to date, Part A, crime is down 6.8% compared to last year.  This is due to a 6.8% decrease in larcenies.
